RURAL CRIME NEWS - MAKE YOURSELF A “HARD TARGET”

Some interesting numbers emanating from the latest NZ Police / Federated Farmers 2021 Rural crime survey

Let’s take a quick  look at some of the numbers…

1200 Farmers surveyed across NZ

52%  surveyed were impacted by crime – that’s a 10% increase from the 2016 survey

71% of those surveyed were ‘hit’ more than once

17.5% of those surveyed were ‘hit’ five or more times

50% of those surveyed report farm animals being stolen or killed

20% increase in reported theft of farm fuel

26% of those surveyed report quad bike or other vehicle theft – an increase of 14%

50% of those surveyed suffer from poaching

47% of those surveyed did not improve security after an incident. 24% took two incidents and 11% three incidents before security was improved

You want to know how to improve your chances of not being one of these statistics?

Here’s a sage piece of advice for free – MAKE YOURSELF A “HARD TARGET”

There are some links on the Federated Farmers and NZ Police websites that are well worth a read and go some way to helping you achieve “Hard Target” status.

In our experience, however, there is a breed of hardened “Crim” who is wise to the subtle nuances of crime prevention and is only deterred when he’s caught with his hands in the cookie jar and his collar is felt by the long arm of the law. A different approach is required for these sort of people.
